1. What initially attracted you to the idea of owning a campervan?
We’ve been passionate campers for over 15 years, spending countless weekends in tents with our dogs. While we constantly upgraded our setup – bigger tents, better beds, stoves etc. – but the one thing that became clear over time was how cumbersome the whole process of setting up and packing down became. Eventually, we downsized to a small pop-up tent for convenience, but it lacked the luxuries we loved in our larger tent. We began to envy the freedom campervans provided: the ease of pulling into a campsite, minimal setup, and the ability to move on whenever we felt like it. It also meant we could travel and camp year-round without the limitations that winter brings when sleeping in a tent. After years of camping, we were ready for something that offered ultimate freedom - seamless travel, the ability to wild camp, and the flexibility to explore without the daily hassle of packing and pitching a tent.
2. What made you decide to take the plunge and buy a campervan when you did?
As we embarked on the exciting journey of building our dream home in the Outer Hebrides, we quickly realised we didn’t want to settle into a traditional rental during the interim. Instead, we saw this as the perfect opportunity to turn what could have been a long wait into an unforgettable adventure. We wanted a mobile home that would give us the freedom to explore Scotland - especially its remote corners and live fully off-grid while our house was being built. It was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to embrace the kind of nomadic lifestyle we’d always dreamed of. We asked ourselves, "When else would we have this unique opportunity to spend 8 months truly immersed in nature, exploring new places and making lasting memories?"
3. What did you name your van and why?
We named our van Rafiki, after the wise baboon from The Lion King. There are two reasons for this: First, we have a deep love for safari and Africa’s wild landscapes and feeling truly connected to nature. Second, in Swahili, "Rafiki" means "friend," which reflects how we see our van - a trusted companion on this incredible journey.
4. How do you typically use your van?
Since moving into the van full-time, we’ve been exploring Scotland - particularly the islands, while balancing work commitments. We spend most of our time off-grid, immersing ourselves in nature and seeking out remote spots for hiking, photography, wildlife watching and dark skies star gazing. When we need to head back to England for meetings, we typically park up at campsites as it isn’t as easy to wild camp in England. Looking ahead, we’re excited to continue our travels even after moving into our new home, with plans for a European road trip next year. Our dream destination? Norway - because its rugged landscapes, abundant wildlife and endless wilderness are calling to us!
5. What made Vanlife Conversions stand out during your research?
Vanlife Conversions immediately stood out for their beautiful, bespoke designs. Unlike many companies that offer generic interiors, their focus on creating tailored, unique spaces that reflect the personality and hobbies of the owner really resonated with us. As first-time campervan buyers, we had so many questions, but from our very first conversation with Emily and Oli, we felt completely understood. Their expertise - particularly with off-grid living, was a game-changer for us. The team’s attention to detail and willingness to work with us to bring our vision to life made them the obvious choice.
6. Describe your experience before, during and after your van build?
From the very start, Vanlife Conversions took the time to truly understand our needs - particularly that we’d be living in the van full-time with three dogs and wanted to be fully self-sufficient. Their expertise on off-grid setups - electrical and gas systems, solar panels, heating and water - was crucial, especially given the unpredictable Scottish weather. One of the key moments in the process was our visit to their workshop. Seeing other vans in various stages of build was invaluable to see different features in action and imagine our new life. It also gave us a chance to reflect and refine our ideas.
The build process itself was incredibly engaging. Every Friday, we’d receive detailed updates, complete with photos and videos, which made us feel like we were part of the journey. We were able to tweak the design along the way, adding features that suited our needs - nothing was too much trouble for the team.
The aftercare has been exceptional, too. Since taking delivery, Emily and Oli have been incredibly supportive, always available to answer our questions and help us get the most out of our van. Their communication is prompt, friendly, and professional, which has made a huge difference in ensuring we’re happy with our van and the way it’s performing.
7. What are the top 3 features of your van that you can’t live without?
Starlink internet & cab table: As remote workers, staying connected no matter where we are is essential. Starlink gives us incredible internet in even the most remote parts of Scotland, and the cab table allows us both to work comfortably from different areas of the van.
OGO composting toilet: While not the most glamorous feature, this composting toilet has been a lifesaver for off-grid living. It's comfortable, easy to use (thanks to its electric agitator), and, best of all, it’s odour-free. This feature has allowed us to stay off-grid for extended periods without relying on campsite facilities.
Hot water & heating system: We were amazed by how quickly the van heats up when we switch on the heating, and the shower is a luxurious treat with piping-hot water. We had expected to rely on hot water bottles and electric blankets during chilly nights, but we've left those behind because the van’s heating system is more than enough to keep us cozy.
8. What was important to you when it came to customisation?
We wanted the van to feel like a true home, not just another generic camper. It was important that the interior reflected our personal style, while also incorporating practical, smart features that would make life on the road both easier and more enjoyable. The ability to choose our own colour scheme, tiles, and fabrics was crucial in creating a space that felt both comfortable and uniquely ours.
Beyond aesthetics, we also wanted to ensure the van was functional for our lifestyle. As dog owners, we knew we needed some key features to make life with our three dogs easier. We added D-rings to the outside of the van to securely attach them when we’re outdoors, so they can enjoy the natural surroundings. In the garage, we requested a MudDaddy warm shower to rinse them off after muddy hikes or beach days – which has been an absolute game-changer.
We also wanted an awning to provide shelter so we can enjoy nature even during the Scottish winter! Whether we’re relaxing outside or cooking in the open, the awning gives us that extra space to be outside and fully immerse ourselves in the scenery, rain or shine.
9. How has owning your van transformed your lifestyle?
Owning the van has given us a newfound sense of freedom and flexibility. We both had high-pressure jobs that required long hours and extensive travel, and we reached a point where we wanted to break away from that routine. Now, we spend our days surrounded by nature - whether it’s hiking through forests, gazing at mountains, or listening to the waves at the beach. Living in the van has allowed us to be truly present, stress-free, and connected with the natural world around us. It’s not just a lifestyle change - it’s a complete shift in how we live and work and it has significantly improved our mental health and wellbeing.
10. What is your best tip for someone considering getting a campervan?
Take your time to really think about how you plan to use the van, as this will shape almost every decision. What’s important for your lifestyle and comfort? Some features may not seem glamorous at first, but they can make a huge difference in daily life - things like your choice of toilet, a reliable heating system, or a robust power setup. These may not be the “sexy” upgrades, but they’re the ones that will make your time on the road more enjoyable and stress-free.
Also, consider where you’ll be spending most of your time - will you be staying in campsites or venturing off-grid? If you’re planning to wild camp, make sure your van is equipped with the right off-grid features.
Another tip is to think about the little details that will make life easier, especially if you’re going to be living in the van full-time. For instance, a comfy mattress, an easy-to-use kitchen setup, and a good shower can make a world of difference when you're on the road for long stretches.
Finally, if you’re planning to work remotely, don’t underestimate the importance of connectivity - reliable internet, like Starlink, can be a game-changer, especially in remote locations. And make sure you have a comfortable workspace that suits your needs so you can keep up with your work while enjoying the adventure.
